Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship is detailed in a new book by biographer Tom Bower, with a representative for the couple responding to Bower’s allegations against the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This was a rare statement by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry about the negative attention they receive.
Through their publicist, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry responded to excerpts from author Tom Bower’s new book published in The Times on March 13th. Bower’s latest biography, Betrayal: Power, Deception and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, focuses on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in several chapters, including newly published articles.
In a statement, representatives for the couple criticized Mr Bower’s obsession with the Sussexes and said his work was facilitating an “extraordinary conspiracy”.
“Mr. Bower’s commentary has long crossed a fixed line from criticism,” a spokesperson told People magazine. “This is a person who has publicly said, ‘The monarchy is actually dependent on actually erasing Sussex people from our living conditions,’ and those words speak for themselves.”
They continued, “He has made a career out of building ever-more elaborate theories about people he doesn’t know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere, but those looking for crazy conspiracies and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
Bower’s 2022 book, Revenge, also focused on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who retired from working as royals and went to live in Montecito, California.
Bower’s latest work criticizes Harry’s Invictus Games, an international sporting event for disabled military personnel, and questions the legitimacy of some of the participants. A spokesperson for the Invictus Games Foundation also released a statement, saying: “It is disappointing that the Times has focused on commentary that appears to be driven by a long-established agenda rather than a true understanding of the Invictus Games and the communities it supports.”
They continued to argue that Bower’s suggestion was “deeply disrespectful to the men and women for whom the Games were created.”
“The focus must remain on the courage, recovery and camaraderie of those who served,” the statement concluded.
