Sports veteran Mary Carrillo will co-host coverage of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, replacing Savannah Guthrie, who is focusing on the kidnapping of her mother Nancy, NBC Sports announced Wednesday.
Carrillo, who will be competing in his 17th Olympics, will join Terry Gannon, who was previously announced as a co-host.
“Our hearts go out to Savannah and the entire Guthrie family, and we continue to have our full support,” Molly Solomon, executive producer and president of NBC Olympic Productions, said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have a deep bench of talented commentators to take on these roles. Mary is one of the most experienced Olympic commentators ever and is an excellent storyteller. She and Terry will guide American viewers through one of the world’s greatest global moments.”
This will be the first Olympics in recent memory without a prominent presence as the anchor of NBC’s “Today” show. Guthrie’s “Today” co-anchor Craig Melvin will remain in the United States for duties related to the morning show. In 2025, Gasly and Hoda Kotb appeared during coverage of the opening ceremony, but did not host the coverage. NBC Sports has worked in recent years to pivot its Olympic coverage to more entertainment in an effort to draw a wider audience to the spectacle.
NBC said Ahmed Fareed, who was scheduled to serve as daytime host in Milan for part of the Games, will host “Olympic Late Night” from February 7th to February 9th.
Carrillo has worked on 14 Olympics for NBCUniversal, providing essays and hosting three closing ceremonies. She plans to cover the Games as a sports reporter following the opening ceremony. , Shaun White appears in the booth with Carrillo and Gannon during the parade of athletes.
