Martin Short spills his wedding tea and cake!
On Wednesday, January 21, the 75-year-old comedian and actor appeared on the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! There, he revealed how he almost ruined the wedding of his Murder in the Building co-star Selena Gomez and her husband Benny Blanco over a food gaffe.
Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37, tied the knot on September 27 in Santa Barbara, California, and Short shared a speech with Gomez and fellow OMITB star Steve Martin.
“The wedding was perfect, it was beautiful…I mean, everything was perfect except for the reception night,” Short said, beginning the story.
“It was a big, big party… There was a big tent and at the back of the tent there was a separate seating area with couches and chairs. So if you had a group, like our group ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ there were about 12 people,” he continued, adding that Paul Rudd and his wife Julie were among those who were there.
“And there was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I thought there was a wedding cake in every section in the back,” Short added, drawing laughter from the audience. “So, a few hours later, they still hadn’t cut the wedding cake, and Steve (Martin) said he was leaving.”
Short added with a laugh, “Maybe we were having cocktails, I don’t know. So I said, ‘Oh, Steve, I can’t leave now.’ I had a fork in my hand. ‘I can’t leave yet without the wedding cake.'” And I cut the wedding cake on one side and cut it on the other, and everyone in the group yelled, “Marty!” ”
“It was a wedding cake,” Short admitted.

A photo of a love heart cake from “Just Wedding” then appeared on the screen, with large slice marks and fork prints on the side, causing the audience to gasp.
“I tried to fix it with a fork,” Short said. “This was the worst. This was about an hour before the announcement. So I turned to Paul Rudd and said, ‘Well, let’s just go home.'”
“Then the wedding coordinator called and the chef came out,” he added.
Short said he was imitating the chef and the chef looked like he was French. “He said, ‘What the hell happened here?’

“Then they did the surgery, and in the end it ended up looking like a Hollywood wedding cake, which was beautiful, but with a few tweaks,” he said to loud laughter from the audience.
A photo of Gomez and music producer Blanco, whom Short affectionately described as “my extra child,” then appeared on the screen, and the cake was rotated diagonally to reveal a picture-perfect figure.
“When I did that, Steve looked pale and freaked out,” Short added.
He also recalled the moment light-heartedly, saying, “I kept saying, ‘Guys, I can’t let Selena know.'” And Stephen said, “I might tell her in a month or so.” ”
The Rare Beauty founder and Blanco got married in a dreamy ceremony wearing custom Ralph Lauren. In addition to Short, Martin, Rudd, Gomez, and Blanco, other famous friends Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran were also among those in attendance.
Gomez announced the happy news on Instagram with a series of photos from her happy day, with the caption: “🤍 9.27.25 🤍.”
