The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens on September 22, 2026.
Co-founded by George Lucas and his wife Melody Hobson, the 11-acre campus is located in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park and features 300,000 square feet of buildings and 35 galleries, totaling 100,000 square feet.
The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 40,000 works of art by Norman Rockwell, Kadir Nelson, Jesse Wilcox Smith, North Carolina Wyeth, Beatrix Potter, Judy Baca, Frida Kahlo, and Maxfield Parrish. Legends of comic art like Windsor McCay, Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware, and R. Crumb. and photographers Gordon Parks, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Dorothea Lange. The museum also includes the Lucas Archives, which contains models, props, concept art, and costumes from Lucas’ filmmaking career.
“Stories are myths that, when illustrated, help humans understand the mysteries of life,” Lucas said in a statement Wednesday morning. “This museum was built on the belief that illustrated stories are a universal language.”
Hobson said: “This is a people’s art museum. These images represent the beliefs we hold every day. As such, this art belongs to everyone. Our hope is that when people pass through the gallery, they see themselves and their humanity reflected.”
The museum was designed by Ma Yansong of MAD and the garden by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA. The building also includes two theaters, a library, restaurants, cafes, retail and community spaces.
Lucas announced in 2016 that the museum would be located in Los Angeles after previous plans in San Francisco and Chicago fell through due to local opposition. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 14, 2018.
