Lily Allen talks about what she learned after splitting from David Harbour.
In an interview with Observer UK on Saturday, December 20, the pop star said she now has a better understanding of the “pain” she may have caused during her first marriage to ex-husband Sam Cooper.
While Allen, 40, says there are “no bad people or good people in marriage,” she says she has discovered a new perspective.
“I did some bad things in my first marriage, so now I understand the pain I may have caused,” she told the magazine. “I learned how scary it is to be on the receiving end of something like that.”

Allen also addressed whether he would be open to remarrying in the future.
“I’d like to say I never want to do it again, but I love it. You know what else?” she said.
Allen continued, “I like being chosen. I like jewelry. I like dressing up. I like celebrating. I don’t like talking about money. I like my independence. But I don’t like divorce.”

Allen and Harbor, 50, married in 2020, but a source confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair had divorced in February after four years of marriage.
Allen’s new album, West End Girl, includes lyrics inspired by the breakup of her marriage to Harbour.
“I’ve been trying to document my life in a new city and the events that led me to where I am now. At the same time, I’ve used common experiences as the basis for songs that try to dig into why we humans act the way we do. As such, this record is a mixture of fact and fiction,” she previously said in a press release statement about the album.
Allen is also the mother of daughters Marnie, 12, and Ethel, 14, with ex-husband Sam Cooper, whom she was married to from 2011 to 2018.
In 2020, she spoke about her divorce from Cooper in an interview on British talk show Loose Women.
“My husband and I share custody of our kids, so I can work one week and have a week off. This actually helps my work a lot because if my husband takes the kids, I can focus completely on my studio work,” Allen said at the time. “We’re both very friendly. The kids go to school equidistant from our house, so it’s worked out well.”
Their breakup, and her life as a mother, inspired much of her 2018 album, No Shame.
