The live-action “Life Is Strange” TV series is greenlighted on Amazon Prime Video.
Based on a video game franchise of the same name, the show is written by Charlie Kobel. Charlie Kobel will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will be executive produced under the Story Kitchen banner. The series comes from Square Enix, Story Kitchen and LuckyChap and is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
“Story Kitchen has always believed that ‘Life is strange’ is more than just a game. It’s a cultural touchstone,” said Johnson and Goldberg of Story Kitchen. “After a decade of travel, we are honored to bring this beloved story to Amazon MGM with our incredible partners at Square Enix, the incredible showrunner/writer Charlie Kobel and the incredible team of Lucky Chap.
According to the official logline, the story continues with Max. “The students in the photo discover that they can save the life of their childhood friend, Chloe. She struggles to understand this new skill, so the pair discovers a dark side to their town, revealing a dark side to the town that forces them to ultimately influence them.”
“Adapting Life Is Strange is a great honor for Amazon MGM Studios,” Covell said. “I’m a huge fan of the game and am excited to work with the incredible teams of Square Enix, Story Kitchen and LuckyChap. I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s stories with fellow players and new viewers.”
The first “Life Is Strange” game was released in 2015 and brought positive reviews, industry admiration, award nominations and victory. In 2023, it was reported that the game had totaled over 20 million players. The original game was followed by the 2017 prequel, “Life Is Strange: The Before the Storm.” “The Great Adventures of Captain Spirit” and “Life Is Strange 2” were released in 2018. 9 publishers are by Square Enix.
“We’ve been a huge fan of the visionary Charlie Kobel for many years, so partnering with them on adapting life is truly a dream come true,” Lucky Chap said. “Charlie is an exceptional steward in Reform IP and feels very fortunate to be at the helm of such an original and beloved culturally resonant video game. I’m also deeply grateful that I can’t wait to bring Chloe, Max and Arcadia Bay to Life with me, working with friends at Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen and Square Enix.”
There have been attempts to develop the TV series “Life is Strange” for nearly 10 years. The legendary television was originally planned to produce, but Johnson has been involved in the project from the start. However, this is the first time that a TV version of the game has been officially ordered from the series.
“Over the years, there have been a lot of people asking them to create a TV show for “Life Is Strange.” We believe we can ultimately partner with Amazon MGM Studios, which we can trust, to bring our universe to life.”
Covell is best known for writing the Netflix Dark Comedy series, “The End of the F ***ing World.” Most recently, they created the Netflix drama “Kaos” and co-created the British drama “Truelove” with Iain Weatherby. Additional writing credits include the series “Human” and the feature film “Birn Burn Burn.”
“We are very excited to see global Prime Video customers experience the dynamic world of Life Is Strange,” said Nick Pepper, head of the SVOD TV & Development series at Amazon MGM Studios. “This series is in great hands with Charlie Kobel, who created a deeply seductive story based on the iconic video game. Charlie and the incredible collaborators of Lucky Chap, Story Kitchen and Square Enix are the perfect team to offer a monumental adaptation that will captivate dedicated fans and new audiences.”
This marks the latest game adaptation for finding a home in Prime Video. It has recently been reported that the highly anticipated “Tomb Raider” series starring Sophie Turner, a production company of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and another Story Kitchen, will begin filming in January 2026. Prime Video is currently airing a series version of “Fallout” with season 2 of that show starting in December.
Other game-based shows in Prime Video’s production include the “Wolfenstein” series, the “Mass Effect” TV series, the “God of War” series (which originally won the Greenlight in 2022), and the series based on the tabletop wargame “Warhammer 40,000” starring Henry Cavill.
Covell is represented by Lark and UTA. Story Kitchen is represented by WME & Pryor Cashman. LuckyChap is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
