Liam Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly that he stopped using social media because of “most of last year” after he announced that Netflix would take over the role of Geralt in “The Witcher,” a fan favorite who discovered the fantasy series for three seasons. Hemsworth will become the main character of the show for the last two seasons, starting with the release of Season 4 in October.
“There was a lot of noise and I had to put it aside. It started to be a distraction,” Hemsworth said of fans’ reaction to his casting. “I’ve handled that kind of thing a lot in the past, and all you know is that I love making movies at the end of the day, I love telling stories and acting.
Fans were devastated to hear that Cavill would not continue the series. The “Man of Steel” star tried to get ahead of the fan backlash by giving Hemsworth an immediate blessing. As Cavill wrote in a statement at the time, “In my place, the fantastic Liam Hemsworth will take up the white wolf mantle. Like the greatest literary characters, I will hand over the torch, in honor of Geralt and enthusiasm, and I want to see Liam this most charming and subtle man.”
Lauren Hissrich, creator of the “The Witcher” series and showrunner, told EW that he had told EW that it had been happening “for a while” about Cavill’s exit from the series before the recast of Hemsworth became official.
“He was planning other roles that he really wanted to commit to himself,” the showrunner said of the show’s original star. “And for us, you don’t want to hug someone and force them to do things they don’t want to do. I think that’s why it really felt like a symbiotic decision.”
Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer in the series, said, “I cried out” when I found out about Cavill’s exit and replied, “I remember it so vividly. It really affected me. We bonded so deeply with these people and lost everything to this character.
However, Cavill’s exit never ended in The Witcher. As Hissrich explained, “There was never a serious conversation about the show not continuing. The show is bigger than the actors. It’s bigger than me. There’s a book series. There’s a video game. We’re the third entry in this.
Released on Netflix in two parts in June and July 2023, “The Witcher” season 3 was the final outing as a character. Hemsworth officially debuts on October 30th of Season 3 Stream.
