“KPOP Demon Hunters” is a summer animation phenomenon and is the most streamed film in Netflix history.

The film about a K-Pop girl group that tracks mythical monsters when they’re not filling stadiums or arenas has overtaken “Red Notas,” an action comedy with Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. “KPOP Demon Hunters” attracted a total of 236 million views compared to the 239 million people won by “Red Notification.” Finishing the top five movies on Netflix’s most streamed list is Taron Egerton Striller’s “Carry-on,” an adventure film with Reynolds, the satire of Leonardo DiCaprio, “Don’t Look Up” and “The Adam Project.”

“KPOP Demon Hunters” won a rare theatrical release from Netflix last weekend. The streaming service did not publicly share box office results, but sources say it was the best-selling film of the weekend, earning between $18 million and $20 million. “KPOP Demon Hunters” was also Netflix’s most streamed film last week, attracting another 205.4 million views.

“Kpop Demon Hunters” was directed by scriptwriters Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. It was based on the story conceived by Kang.

Arden Chong, Ahn Hyo-Seop, May Hong and Ji-Young Yoo lead the voice cast. The original songs for the film were written by Ehae, Jenna Andrews, Danny Chong, Aid, Vince, Cush, Daniel Rojas, Stephen Kirk, Lindgren and Markson Nenbrick. The soundtrack was also a top chart that was a hit.

Netflix debuted “KPOP Demon Hunters” on June 20th. Critics embraced the film’s style and originality, and variety Peter DeBrague called it “high energy” and “high concept,” praised by the New York Times brand Yo for creating “a charming, entertaining, artistically punchy original universe.”
