Kirsten Dunst will be starring alongside Sidney Sweeney in “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
The film will be released in 2025 and will be a sequel to the hit film “The Housemaid,” which has grossed nearly $400 million so far. This twisted tale, based on Frieda McFadden’s best-selling novel, stars Sweeney as Millie, a young woman with a mysterious past who is hired as a live-in maid for a wealthy family with a dark secret. In the sequel, Millie returns and, according to the plot description, she takes on a job “to protect the home of a woman she is never allowed to meet, only to discover the truth behind a locked door that threatens to reveal secrets far darker than her own.”
“We are honored to work with Kirsten Dunst to bring the next chapter of ‘The Housemaids’ to the big screen,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Erin Westerman. “She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness. In contrast to the ever-charming Sydney Sweeney, she will be a shocking force in a world where nothing goes as planned.”
Paul Feig will direct The Housemaid’s Secret alongside screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenschein, who adapted the previous film. Michele Morrone also returns as groundskeeper Enzo, reprising his role from the previous film. Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Skrenner, who play a married couple living a perfect life far from the original, will not appear in the sequel as the story focuses on the new family.
Producers include Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures. Feig and his partner Laura Fisher are producing through Pretty Dangerous Pictures. and Sweeney through his Fifty Fifty Films banner. Carly Elter, who directed Hidden Pictures’ first film, returns as executive producer. Hidden Pictures’ Alex Young will also serve as executive producer. Fifty Fifty’s Kayley McGregor will serve as co-producer. Chelsea Kujawa and Maria Ascanio are overseeing the project for Lionsgate.
Dunst recently joined the cast of “A Minecraft Movie 2,” which is scheduled for release next June. She will also star in director Ruben Ostlund’s next film, The Entertainment System Is Down. Dunst, who was nominated for an Oscar for “Power of the Dog,” last appeared in “The Roofman,” starring Channing Tatum, and “Civil War,” directed by Alex Garland. News of her casting in The Housemaid’s Secret was first reported by Deadline.
