Hell hath no fury like the Kardashians being scorned.
Kim Kardashian revealed on Wednesday’s episode of her podcast “Call Her Daddy” that she recently had a huge “clash” with her mother Kris Jenner over an ultra-rare Hermès Birkin shoulder bag.
The 44-year-old Skims mogul opened up about the scandal during a 2011 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians when host Alex Cooper asked her what item in her closet could cause a similar mess to the infamous diamond earring incident in which an expensive accessory fell into the ocean.
The drama began when the reality star became “obsessed” with a vintage Birkin shoulder bag designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. (Gaultier was creative director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010.)
Kardashian told Cooper she was unsure whether to tell her mother about the holy grail item.
“I want to collect them all, but they’re so rare that I’ll never find them. Should I send the picture to my mom and tell her, or will she copy me?” she wondered aloud.
Ultimately, she decided to involve Chris, texting her runway photos and campaign images, begging him to “want it if I could find it.”
But then Kardashian made a fatal mistake. While she was in study mode (likely taking the California bar exam in July), she put her phone away for two weeks. I even ignored the email from the store saying they had found the bag. She negotiated a lower price but forgot to confirm the purchase before going radio silent again.
“I don’t care who it is, I won’t respond,” she recalled telling herself.
When he finally met his mother and sister Khloe Kardashian in person, Kris casually asked, “Who is going to give my sister a bag for her birthday?” The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star assumed it was the Hermès in question — and speculated that her beloved mom had bought it for her as an early birthday surprise (Kim’s birthday is October 21st).
As it turns out, she was wrong. A few days later, Kylie Jenner, who celebrated her 28th birthday on August 10, posted a photo of the bag itself and thanked Kris for the birthday gift. According to the Khy founder’s social media posts, the bag appears to be the exotic Hermes Birkin 42cm JPG crocodile leather shoulder bag in shiny Bordeaux leather that recently sold on 1stDibs for $73,000.
Kardashian immediately called her mother and vented her anger.
“Are you kidding me?” she fumed. “I’m turning into a monster.”
Kris claimed she had “no idea” what her daughter was talking about and claimed Kylie sent her a birthday wish list. But Ms. Kardashian wasn’t buying it. Especially since she was looking at the same list and the bag wasn’t on it.
“I’ve talked to you enough,” she told her mother, pulling out the receipt. It was a screenshot of a negotiation at the store and a text message exchange with Chris. “I was furious,” she told Cooper.
However, the story has a happy ending thanks to Chloe, 41. Good American founder Chloe revealed that she actually bought the same bag for Kim’s birthday, and decided to give it to her a few months early after learning about the drama.
“Chloe is so real, dude,” Cooper pointed out.
“I’m really silly about the bag thing, but that was my latest crush,” Kardashian admitted.
Chris has given Birkin bags to his daughters many times over the years, including for Christmas and birthdays. And what Kim received was For years, she has coveted Hermès style from everyone, including close friends and ex-husband Kanye West. She shows off her huge handbag closet on social media, and some estimates say the collection is worth millions of dollars.
No matter what, you can always count on at least one Kardashian to secure the bag.
