Keanu Reeves is remembering his “Something’s Gotta Give” co-star Diane Keaton, who passed away on October 11th at the age of 79.
“It’s completely professional,” Reeves told E! News at the New York screening of Keaton’s new film Good Fortune on Monday. “She was very kind to me. She was a generous, generous artist and a very special and unique person.”
He added: “It was amazing to see her and Jack Nicholson together. Just the history they shared and the love and affection they had for each other. It was just amazing.”
Reeves starred in Something’s Gotta Give as Julian Mercer, a plucky young doctor who is an avid fan of Keaton’s retired playwright Erica Barry. The two eventually develop a romantic relationship. The 2003 film also stars Jack Nicholson, Amanda Peet, Frances McDormand, and Jon Favreau.
“Something’s Gotta Give” director Nancy Meyers paid tribute to Keaton on Instagram on Monday. Alongside a photo of her longtime friend and star, she wrote: “The last 48 hours have not been easy. It has been comforting to see everyone’s tributes to Diane. As a film lover, I am with you all. We have lost a giant. I As a woman, I lost a friend of nearly 40 years, and at times I felt like she was a sister to me as we shared so many truly memorable experiences over those years. Film director, I lost a connection to an actress I can only dream of.”
Another close collaborator, Woody Allen, also recently paid tribute to Keaton. In an essay posted Sunday night in the Free Press, he wrote, “‘Most unique’ is grammatically incorrect, but when you talk about Diane Keaton, all the rules of grammar, and perhaps all the rest, are suspended. Unlike anyone the planet has ever seen or will ever see again, her face and laugh lit up every space she entered.”
