Sometimes I ask myself: How do celebrities do that? And “it” means they look very good on their unfair days. But there are days when celebrities like Katie Holmes reveal their answers.

In New York City last November, the actress dressed up for a walk on the streets. At first, all I saw was her long trench coat and beautiful rustic colors that somehow matched the backgrounds of all the fall tones around her in one way or another.

When I got a different look, I saw that there were some basics under the gems of this coat: a pair of black leggings and what looks like a white T-shirt. She also wore a large tote bag (a style she previously carried around with her) and several booties both in seasonal colors. In other words, the coat was an outstanding piece, making it a sham. Her trench coat, leggings, boots and tote bags were inspired by her style below.

Cider Double Breasted Tweed Hound Tooth Coat

My wardrobe is probably 80% basics and 20% statement pieces. And those bundles are long, dramatic toppers. What’s cool about a coat like this is that it doesn’t matter what I’m wearing. In fact, that’s why it’s the best on days when you can’t put your clothes together.

For example, this cider coat can easily make it look more dressed up with a casual look. I also think it’s important to choose a full-length one to get through autumn and winter. Ellen Pompeo has previously worn a very similar style equation.

I’m a fan of loose pants, but even in my wardrobe I know there’s a time and place for leggings. But they have to be seamless. Otherwise they look sporty and I look towards my workout class. This option does not have a center seam.

I haven’t tried Spanx leggings yet, but I know that Gwyneth Paltrow wears a pair of brands (though in other styles). I have tried a few other pieces from Spanx and the quality was out of hand.

High-knee boots are a popular option, but when you need to go out somewhere quickly, I don’t want to sit down to position them. Therefore, shorter boots are more convenient. Only slip-on shoes like this pair, which are sizes 5-11. It’s good for daytime rushes, but those with a slight heel will be edged at night.
