Kate Winslet appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Tuesday night to talk about her directorial debut, but ended up revealing the questionable outfit she wore to an audience with King Charles III decades ago.
Winslet recalled the 1996 premiere of Sense and Sensibility: “The first time I met him, I was only 20 and he came to support me at the royal premiere of Sense and Sensibility.”
For this occasion, she completely wore a sheer black lace jumpsuit, flat black sandals and a black coat.
“I really didn’t expect to see him, so I forgot the fact that I was actually wearing a transparent lace dress,” she added with a laugh. “And thankfully I had a coat on, because as he advanced toward me, I was like, ‘Nipples! Nipples! Nipples! Oh my god.'” Then someone said, “Coat!” And (I covered myself) I said, “Your Majesty.” ”
The actress had more opportunities to choose an outfit suitable for meeting the royal couple. This summer, she became one of the ambassadors for the King’s Foundation, which “supports small charities and obsolete crafts.”
For last night’s show, Winslet opted for a more tailored black-and-white pinstripe suit and stiletto heels, but suffered a near wardrobe malfunction – admitting she stumbled out of her dressing room on her way to the stage.
Hardcore Winslet fans may associate one of the most iconic “Titanic” looks when Rose DeWitt Bukater wears a white pinstripe coat when the character is first introduced, albeit in reverse colors.
Winslet is currently on a press tour for the film Goodbye June, which was written by her son Joe Anders.
Anders, now nearly 22, wrote the film when he was 19, drawing on his own family dynamics when the death of his grandmother, Winslet’s mother, brought them together.
Winslet is the film’s director, producer, and also appears as an actor. It was the first feature film directed by Winslet, 56, and a breakthrough moment for Winslet and her son.
