Veteran actor Kabir Bedi (“Sandkan” and “Octopassy”) is set to star as Dr. Raj Bosra in “USA v Raj,” a biopic drama about the three and a half years of incarceration of an Indian-American surgeon.
Directed and filmed by Ravi K. Chandran (“Bhramam”) and targeted for a summer 2026 release, the film tells the story of Dr. Raj Bothra, who was 79 years old and faced 54 federal accusations before being exempt from the unanimous ju-choice verdict in June 2022.
Emily Shah joined the cast as Sonia Bosra and played the daughter of a doctor who stood by his side during the legal battle. The project will adapt the book “USA V/S Raj,” written by Dr. Bothra with co-author Jennifer Debellis and presented at this year’s Toronto Film Festival by “Sholay” director Ramesh Sippy and “Fire” filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
The Oscar-winning sound designer Pookutty (“Slumdog Millionaire”) leads the technical team, but the script comes from authors Zill-e-Huma, Shubho Deep Pal, Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal.
Bollywood Hollywood Productions Prashant Shah is produced through a partnership with Twickenham Productions in London. Sunny Vohra and Superna Sethi of Twickenham Studios are executive producers. Filming spans Twickenham Studios and locations in both the UK and India.
Having received the honor of India’s Padma Shri through humanitarian efforts, Dr. Botra previously worked with Mother Teresa to advise Pope John Paul II on global health issues. He also led a charitable medical initiative providing equipment to hospitals in India.
“This is more than just legal drama,” Chandran said. “It’s a human story about the costs of sincerity, family, emotions, and systematic failure. Now is the time for the world to see what actually happened.”
The production is currently under pre-production, with casting underway.
