Colin Minihan’s new film “Coyotes,” debuting Saturday at Austin’s fantastic fest, Justin Long and Kate Bosworth play the couple forced to survive while their Hollywood Hills home is surrounded by killer coyotes. The actor has been married in real life since 2023, so it’s a role that is close to their hearts. The only problem? In the film, their characters’ relationships are a little rocky, with Long and Bosworth clearly on the same loving page.
“We had so much fun together and we love each other so much that we end up in a lot of plays in the scene,” Bosworth says. “But Colin will have to come and say, ‘Everyone sees that these people have a problem.’ I’m joking about my adoration of Justin, which overturned my professional capabilities. ”
The couple we met while filming the 2021 horror comedy House of Darkness, were busy directing the short film “Fur Babies,” which is a creepy anthology from last year’s creepy anthology, “v/h/s/beyond,” so they came across “Coyote” when they sent the script for a long time. Bosworth read it on his behalf and encouraged him to consider it the lead role.
“My favorite movies are movies that ride on the edge of razor horror and comedy. There’s a genre mashup,” she says. “This script certainly reads that way, and when we see Colin’s “What Keeps You Living,” it’s a really great movie. Having worked in this industry for a long time, he had challenging suppressions in certain places and chose to contain them in certain ways.
The couple were looking for a project to work on together, but their shared agents suggested that Bosworth consider the role of the other lead role. The trio has a strong shared vision that they continue to have a creative partnership beyond the “Coyote.” Before the film’s Fantastic Fest Bow, it was announced that Bosworth and Long would be remake Minihan’s 2011 cult hit “Grave Encounter” with him, and that they would be set as Long Stars.
“We all met, and it was really love to first meet between us and Colin,” Bosworth says. “It’s still a love story.”
The pair say that Minihan’s storytelling hits chords with them as actors while they try to walk the tightrope between humor and horror in a film like “Coyote.”
“He’s very true,” Long says. “It’s one of the things that gave me a lot of confidence about him. There are certain growing situations where these people are, but the acting has a very grounded nature. He has a very comforting ear as an actor.
The obvious appeal to this film is the action of Campy, Gory Coyote, but the couple is enthusiastic about each other’s ability to separate heavier moments within the family arc.
“I’m just my biggest fan of Justin,” Bosworth says. “I was so blown away and impressed because people clearly know him so well for the horror genre and comedy. But the dramatic moments in this film for him are really impressive and they are just as I am professional and of course his wife, but he is very good.
He reflects his long blush through his compliment, and returns it, and immediately praises Bosworth.
“Her performances have everything,” he says. “It has a shaking of wild strength, it has a real soft, motherly heart. It’s a real pivot that I’m excited to see.”
Even after a short zoom interview, it is clear that even the Killer Coyotes were unable to separate this couple.
