Jon Voight has called on President Trump to “cancel” Zoran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral bid. The 86-year-old Oscar winner, who was appointed by President Trump to the newly invented title of Special Ambassador to Hollywood on the first day of his second term, chose to make his plea to the president public, posting a two-minute speech on social media with the Star-Spangled Banner in the background.
“We, the people, have faith in President Donald J. Trump. He, and only he, can stop this horror. The only person who can stop this horror is Mayor Mandani, who is going to destroy New York’s wealth and turn it into a socialist shitty city,” Voight said in the video. “May this be a warning to others and may God bless you.”
Mr. Voight, whose primary residence is in Beverly Hills, California, focused his speech on Islamophobic rhetoric, claiming that New York would “become a de facto asylum for extremist Islamic ideology” and that the days after Mr. Mamdani’s election were “the most dangerous period for our people.” The mayor also incorrectly labeled Mamdani, 34, a “communist.” The mayor-elect disputes this, calling himself a “democratic socialist.”
In particular, the presidential administration does not have the legal authority to directly remove the mayor of New York.
“This mayor will destroy this city. We have a duty to demand our rights to the private sanctuaries, our businesses, our property that we all worked so hard to build. And this 35-year-old mayor has no right to dictate socialist rules to a city built on the best principles in brick and stone by hardworking Americans.” Voight continued. “This must be stopped and his mayorship immediately terminated. You, the people of New York, our greatest city, are in danger of losing your city to this communist idiot.”
Mamdani won the New York mayoral election with a majority of votes, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after initially losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Mamdani will take office on January 1.
