On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart criticized Democrats for voting in favor of ending the government shutdown without extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, a key issue the left has been fighting throughout the 41-day government shutdown.
“They’re damn close,” Stewart said angrily. “Less than a full week after the best election night results in years, seven Democratic senators and one ‘independent’ voted along with their Republican counterparts to end the shutdown and reopen the government. And did they receive extended health care benefits?”
“Democrats wanted to include an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies in the deal. In exchange, they got a promise to vote on it at a later date,” Stewart said, relying on ABC 7 audio.
“It’s unbelievable,” Stewart continued. “The wind is on our side! Election wins across the country. Sidney Sweeney’s new movie is a huge hit at the box office! Apparently, her new MAGA fan base is flocking to see the biopic of the lesbian prizefighter who overcomes domestic violence and lives her truth.” Who knew this would happen? Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown not to get what you wanted, but for the promise that you wouldn’t get what you wanted later.”
A bill to end the longest government shutdown in the nation’s history passed the Senate Monday night. However, it must be passed by the House of Representatives and then signed by Donald Trump. Since Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives, it is likely to pass, and President Trump is expected to sign the bill with full right-wing support.
