Just when he thought he was out…they pulled him back into the basement.
John Hannah, who played the savvy thief in 1999’s The Mummy and its two sequels, will return to the grave robbing scene in the upcoming reboot of the series. He joins Brendan Fraser, who played the daring adventurer in those films, and Rachel Weisz, who played Hannah’s sister.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette, best known for “Radio Silence,” are directing the revival from a script by “Family Plan” screenwriter David Coggeshall. Radio Silence was in charge of the movie “Ready or Not,” and also contributed to the revitalization of the “Scream” series with 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI.” Universal is backing the film, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 19, 2028. Plot details are, for lack of a better term, kept secret.
Hannah’s film work includes Sliding Doors, Another Mother’s Son and the BAFTA-nominated Four Weddings and a Funeral. On television, he has recently appeared in Season 6 of Black Mirror, Netflix’s The Decameron, and HBO’s The Last of Us. Hannah recently finished filming the feature film Bedlam with Peter Serafinowicz and Scott Adkins, and is also starring in the 2026 British comedy The Incomer with Domhnall Gleeson. He will next star in the six-part comedy-drama Death in Benidorm.
Jay Polidoro, executive vice president of production and development, and Jacqueline Garrel, director of production and development, will oversee production of Hamunaptra for Universal.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Hannah’s return. Hannah is repped by Artist’s Rights Group and Felker Toczek Suddleson LLP.
