Jodie Sweetin holds no ill will toward former co-star Candace Cameron Bure, despite their conflicting beliefs.
The “Full House” alum said Bure is “the closest thing to a sister” during an appearance on her podcast “The Moment” earlier this week.
“Honestly, Candiace’s faith has always been at the forefront of her mind and I have no problem with that,” Sweetin, 43, explained.
While Sweetin has been an outspoken advocate of liberal causes, Bure has been open about his faith, but acknowledged that his values are at odds with the 48-year-old.
“I don’t have a problem with religion if it brings you peace and happiness. Her brand of religion is not necessarily peace and happiness,” she explained, adding, “I don’t really know.”
“I don’t think you can truly love someone unless you respect them,” Sweetin said.
“I don’t think you can truly love someone unless you respect them enough to recognize their rights, like marriage and physical autonomy,” Sweetin continued.
“It’s some kind of weird pity, it’s not love. For me, standing up and saying how we treat other human beings just because they’re different from us is completely unacceptable. And I’m sure Jesus would say that. But what do I know? I’m not a Christian.”
Ms Sweetin confessed that she had “been vocal” about her opinions, while Ms Bure said she had “been a little more quiet” about politics.
Sweetin said she is “okay” with people who “don’t like what[she says]” or who like her character Stephanie Tanner but “don’t like you as you.”
“It’s like, ‘Wow, watch Full House and don’t follow me online,'” Sweetin said.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to like me, but I try not to create barriers to what I want to be because of other people’s perceptions of what I should be,” she continued. “Candace and I are very different in that respect.”
A representative for Mr. Bure did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Sweetin apparently criticized Bure behind the scenes in 2022 after Bure left Great American Media’s Hallmark Channel. She infamously declared that Bure had “traditional marriage at its core” and excluded gay couples.
Singer JoJo Siwa shared a screenshot of an article titled “Candace Cameron Bure’s New Cable Channel Plans: No Gays” on Instagram at the time, and Sweeten responded sharply in the comments thread, writing, “You know I love you ❤️❤️.”
Bure then unfollowed Sweetin on the platform.
Sweetin has previously compared Bure to a family and talked about the complicated dynamics.
“We just exist in different worlds, but she’s someone I’ve known since I was 5 years old,” Sweetin said on a May episode of the “Vault” podcast.
“It’s like a family. We may not always talk. I know it doesn’t work when politics come up, but I don’t hate you. I’m not going to not hold you, but I’m not going to not shut up either.
She added: “I’ll be kind, but I won’t be quiet.”
