Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have joined as executive producers on “I’m Glad You’re Dead,” which won the short film Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Palestinian Tawfik Barhom directed, wrote and co-starred in the 13-minute drama, which is a Palestinian, French and Greek co-production. The film also stars Ashraf Barhom.

The story follows two brothers who return to their childhood island and are forced to confront the haunting past that binds them together due to hidden tensions and long-buried secrets.

Phoenix said, “This film is a work that confronts memory, trauma, and reconciliation in a way that feels urgent and necessary today. I’m proud to be a part of its future.”

Mara added, “From the moment I saw ‘I’m Glad I’m Dead,’ its emotional weight and restrained power stayed with me. I’m honored to support Tawfiq’s vision and the film’s continued journey.”

Director Barhomme said, “I am deeply touched that Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have chosen to support this film and its story. Their beliefs honor the spirit of this film, and their creative support will be invaluable in bringing The Dead to a wider audience.”

Producers said Phoenix and Mara “will participate in future press, festival introductions, and strategic collaborations to ensure the film’s continued influence and reach.”

The film was co-produced by France’s Quidam and Greece’s Foss Productions. Quidam is best known for Zero F**** Given (Critics Weekly, Cannes, 2021), starring Adèle Exarchopoulos. Foss Productions has produced or co-produced many short and feature films, including “Suntan,” “Pity” and “Echoes of the Past.”

The producers are Tawfeek Barhom, Akis Polizos, Stylianos Kotionis and Alexandre Perrier.

The film will be screened at the Doha Film Festival this month.
