Not all red carpet looks age as well as the wearer. Especially when you’re the incomparable Jennifer Lopez.
The 56-year-old pop icon played fashion critic on “Watch What Happens Live” this Wednesday, rating eight of her most memorable red carpet looks from 1995 to 2007.
In the “Versace or Hibachi” section, “Versace” means to keep and “Hibachi” means to throw into the fire, and the superstar gave his stamp to most of the vintage ensembles.
Her 1998 Golden Globes cutout dress? “Versace,” she declared (though she clarified that it was actually Valentino).
Badgley Mischka’s 1997 Oscar beaded dress received the same treatment as her Poiret: King of Fashion-themed 2007 Old Hollywood-style Met Gala Marchesa dress (“Yeah, I’m not mad,” she opined).
Lopez gushed about her 2006 VMAs look, which featured thigh-high patent leather boots and a turban-style head wrap that matched her Viva mini dress.
“I love you, I’m sorry. I love you,” she said.
When Cohen suggested she could wear a turban today, she enthusiastically agreed.
But not all fashion moments were adopted. The “Waiting for Tonight” singer sent her look from the 1995 “Money Train” premiere straight to the eyeballs.
“It didn’t fit. I’m going to put it on the brazier,” she said, although she acknowledged it was a “beautiful Richard Tyler” dress.
She also had mixed feelings about wearing a baby blue romper accessorized with a thin scarf and a gold statement belt to the 2000 VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards.
“I like the hair,” Lopez said wistfully, before giving his verdict: “The belt was a mess. Let’s make some kind of brazier.”
When Cohen debuted her 2001 VMAs look (an off-the-shoulder leopard-print mini with thigh-high boots and a floppy hat), the “See What Happens Live” audience erupted in applause.
“I had to go with the people,” Lopez agreed, laughing as the crowd cheered.
Her harshest criticism concerned an appearance at the 1996 Nosotros Golden Eagle Awards, in which the then 27-year-old Lopez wore a white maxi skirt and matching crop top, hidden behind a dove-gray shrug.
“Hibachi!!” she exclaimed when she saw the photo.
The appearance comes as Lopez prepares for her “Up All Night: Live in Las Vegas” residency, which begins Dec. 30 at Caesars Palace. Lopez is currently on a whirlwind press tour to promote her new movie, the musical drama Kiss of the Spider-Woman.
