Jennifer Lawrence said during a live recording of her podcast Happy Sad Confused (via People) that she “prefers” to act in sex scenes with strangers because things don’t get too awkward if she has to get intimate with a co-star who isn’t her friend. As an example, the Oscar winner compared getting naked with her Die My Love co-star Robert Pattinson, whom she didn’t know before filming, to kissing her later Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson, when the two were already close friends.
Lawrence and Pattinson filmed a nude scene together on the first day of filming “Die My Love,” directed by Lynne Ramsay, about a new mother battling mental illness.
“It was actually easier because Rob and I didn’t know each other. Which would be better?” Lawrence said. “Imagine me and Josh Hutcherson having to kiss, like in ‘The Hunger Games,’ and that would be… you know, it’s weirder, and yeah, it’s better to do it with someone you don’t know.”
Die My Love hired an intimacy coordinator to help Lawrence and Pattinson with their sex and nude scenes, but Lawrence revealed last year that the pair didn’t need a coordinator on set.
“We didn’t have[an intimacy coordinator]or maybe we did, but we really didn’t… I felt really safe with Rob,” Lawrence said on the “Las Culturistas” podcast. “He’s not a snob and he loves[partner]Suki Waterhouse very much. We mostly talked about kids and relationships. There was never any weird stuff like, ‘Does he think I like him?'” If there’s any of that, there’s probably an intimacy coordinator. Many male actors get offended if they don’t want to have sex, and then the punishment begins. He wasn’t that kind of person. ”
In another interview, Lawrence said she allowed herself to be naked in front of the camera without thinking about how she would be perceived. It was a change of pace from when he went all out for the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings,” doing intense exercise before filming.
“I don’t care about nudity. I’m not sensitive about nudity,” Lawrence said. “I wanted to give Lynn complete artistic freedom…I think being pregnant took away a lot of my worries about vanity and things like that.”Before No Hard Feelings, I was dieting and working out without eating carbs. I was pregnant. What was I going to do? I was working 15 hours a day. I just remember being sent a close-up of my cellulite and being like, ‘Are you okay?’ And I said, “No.” That’s terrible. ”
“Die My Love” is currently streaming on Mubi.
