James Van Der Beek and his wife renewed their vows just two days before the actor passed away from cancer.
“My friend gave me a new ring, I filled my bedroom with flowers and candles, and we renewed our vows from bed,” Kimberly Van Der Beek said in an interview with People magazine on Tuesday.
The former film producer described the ceremony as “simple, beautiful and moving” and explained that his friend and multi-instrumentalist Polangi played “the most beautiful music”.
Polangi concluded the ceremony with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
The newspaper said several of the couple’s close friends attended the renewal, while others participated remotely via Zoom.
The “Dawson’s Creek” alum and Kimberly married on August 1, 2010. They welcomed six children together.
James was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023 and passed away on February 11th at the age of 48.
“He met his final days with courage, faith and grace,” Kimberly, 44, announced on Instagram. “There is much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the sanctity of time. That day will come.”
The actor’s family set up a GoFundMe after his treatment “left the family with no funds.”
More than $2.6 million has been raised (as of Tuesday’s publication).
James, who had a net worth of $3 million, turned to selling autographed merchandise from past projects to help make ends meet before his death.
The “Rules of Attraction” star has been mourned by several of his co-stars over the years, including Katie Holmes.
The actress, who co-starred with James in the movie Dawson’s Creek from 1998 to 2003, wrote on Instagram: “It is with a heavy heart that I write these words.” “We are so grateful to have been a part of James’ journey. He is loved.”
James was reportedly working on a memoir before his death, but it is unclear how far the project has progressed or whether it will ever be published.
The “Varsity Blues” star’s last projects included the upcoming “Legally Blonde” prequel series “Elle” and the 2025 show “Overcompensating.”
