For the second year in a row, the Jogja Netpac Asian Film Festival has partnered with the Academy of Asian Film Awards to present a Hong Kong film program featuring director An Hui and films from multiple generations of filmmakers.

The event period is from November 30th to December. The “Together We Dare to Direct” showcase, to be held on the 4th in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, will feature a masterclass by Hui, one of the most influential female directors in Asian cinema, as well as screenings of nine features and four shorts representing different eras of Hong Kong cinema.

The program celebrates JAFF’s 20th anniversary and builds on the 2023 festival’s collaboration with AFAA, a non-profit organization established by the Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo International Film Festivals to promote Asian cinema globally.

“JAFF’s collaboration with AFAA represents the transformation of Asian cinema through a carefully selected lineup of Hong Kong films that continues to evolve through challenges, reflecting what can be learned from the journeys of filmmakers across generations and genres,” said JAFF Program Director Alexander Matius.

Two of Hui’s films, The Simple Life (2011) and July Rhapsody (2002), will be shown in newly restored 4K. The lineup also includes Man Lim Chong’s documentary Keep Rolling, which chronicles Hui’s creative process.

Additional features include Tommy Kai Chun’s “Another World,” which won the 2025 Golden Horse Award for Best Animated Feature. Robin Lee’s documentary “Four Trails” won the Best New Director award at the 2025 Hong Kong Film Awards. John Woo’s action classic “The Killer”. Crime thriller “Sons of the Neon Night.” And the drama “Remnant”.

This short film compilation features two works by AFAA International Film Camp participant Ivan Chan: “The Apple of My Eye” and “Tomatoes Are Poisonous.”

Lee, Mandelieu Kwan Man Hing, Quist Tsang, and Chan will participate in a Q&A session after the screening. The filmmakers will also be speaking at the JAFF Community Forum, along with production designer Man Lim Chong.

“We are honored to receive support for JAFF20 from a group of Hong Kong directors and film professionals led by the legendary Ann Hui,” said Josie Lin, AFAA Executive Director. “Their presence reflects the skill, discipline and leadership that define the art of directing.”

The program is financially supported by the Hong Kong Creative and Cultural Industries Development Board and the Film Development Fund, with additional support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Authority Jakarta.

The JAFF Market, part of the festival’s markets, will run until December 1st.
