J. J. Abrams’ next film will hit IMAX theaters this fall, Warner Bros. announced Friday.
The film, starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, is officially titled “The Great Beyond” and will be released in theaters on November 13th. Abrams wrote and directed the film, marking his return to big screen blockbusters after directing 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. He also produced the project with Tommy Gormley. Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson round out the film’s star ensemble cast.
Warner Bros. also announced release dates for several 2027 films. Panic Carey, starring Julia Roberts and directed by Sam Esmail, will premiere in IMAX theaters on February 26, 2027. Meanwhile, Tim Miller and Keanu Reeves’ as-yet-untitled team-up will premiere on August 13th.
“Panic Carey” is the latest collaboration between Esmail and Roberts, following the Prime Video series “Homecoming,” the Starz show “Gaslit,” and the Netflix film “Leave the World Behind.” Co-starring Roberts are Eddie Redmayne, Brian Tyree Henry, Ben Chaplin, Aidan Gillen, Joe Alwyn, Naledi Murray and Elizabeth Olsen. Esmail and Roberts produced the new film along with Scott Stuber, Chad Hamilton, Marisa Yeres Gil, and Lisa Gillan.
Details of Miller and Reeves’ sci-fi film are being kept largely secret, but an early logline teased that it would focus on “a smuggler caught in a mysterious time loop, surviving both bloodthirsty mercenaries and sharks in the Caribbean, repeating the same perilous day until he finds his way out.” Miller will direct from a script by Ian Schor. Produced by Matthew Vaughn, Aaron Ryder, Andrew Sweat, and John Zaozirny.
New Line Cinema’s next film in the “The Conjuring” series, “First Communion,” will be released on September 10th. The prequel film, directed by Rodrigue Hart from a script by Richard Nain and Ian Goldberg, expands on the world of The Conjuring, which grossed $2.7 billion. His latest film, The Conjuring, was the highest-grossing film to date, earning approximately $495 million worldwide.
