Mothers are going viral to protect their parenting style.
In a video posted to Tiktok this week by a user named Kat Clark, she explained why her 14-year-old daughter had no trouble leaving town for the concert.
“If you’re too strict, your child will learn how to hide things from you,” Clark said, applying cream to her face as soon as the video began.
Her post, which had gained more than 2 million viewers as of Tuesday, September 2nd, responded to a backlash against the clip explaining why Deja left her recent family trip in San Diego and met her friends in Dallas.
“You need to remember that she’s only 14,” the commenter said of Clark’s first post.
Due to her video response, the influencer with over 7 million followers on the app admitted that “it made it clear that many people don’t like my parenting style.”
She went on to explain that Deja took “the first solo flight to another state to attend a concert with a friend.”
After realising that her child would soon turn 15, Clark recalls her behavior as a teenager, adding that she and her daughter are “not the same.”
“If only you guys knew what I did at 14, 15, 16, I would have been pregnant at 16,” she said, putting on makeup. “It’s cancelled in five seconds, so I’m happy that Tiktok didn’t exist at the time.”
Clark compared his childhood, calling his parents “really strict” and adding that he would always be “the last thing” to open up to his parents.
“But I didn’t really want that for my kids,” she continued, emphasizing the fact that her family isn’t without rules.
“When I was a teenager, I ran away several times, and my parents didn’t know where I was,” Clark said with a laugh at his thoughts. “Deja left. I knew where she was all the time.”
She reached out and added that she “knows her parents.”
“My opinion? Do you have a child who feels so comfortable that he wants to go, rather than hiding things from me? That’s the kind of relationship I have with my child,” concluded Clark.
She previously said, “Do you know how many children fly without parents? Lots. Airlines have tickets called “non-accompanied minors.” Additionally, she shows her husband walking to her gate with Deja and says that her friend’s parents must show her ID to take her from the Dallas airport.
Her first video may have caused a disparity, but her explainer was supported.
“When I become a mom, (you) are my inspiration,” one person wrote. Another added, “I did a solo flight at 7am.”
