I’m embarrassed to be American

Zoey Deutch will attend the 2026 Sundance Film Festival with “Gail Daughtry and Celebrity Sex Passes,” the latest outrageous comedy from “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Wanderlust” filmmaker David Wain. But the actor got serious while discussing his decision to wear an “ICE Out” pin during the Sundance press tour on Variety Studio Presented by Audible.

“For me, I find it impossible not to think about the current state of our country and the brutality of ICE,” Deutsch said. “Seeing communities and people coming together during this time makes me so proud to be an American. But at the same time, seeing how our government is handling things makes me so ashamed to be an American. I just want to stand with the great people of Minnesota.”

Deutch was attending a press conference at Sundance the day after a man was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis. Earlier this month, Renee Good was also killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis. At Sundance, many stars wore “ICE Out” and “Be Good” pins to voice their opposition to ICE.

“We’re at a very devastating moment in this country’s history, and it’s really impossible not to talk about what’s going on right now, the brutality of ICE, and how it has to stop immediately,” Natalie Portman told Variety before the Sundance premiere of The Gallerialist. “But there’s also the beautiful community that Americans are showing right now. They’re showing up for each other, protecting each other, fighting for freedom. It’s a bittersweet moment to celebrate something we’re proud of against the backdrop of a country in pain.”

Olivia Wilde told Variety on the Sundance red carpet for her latest directorial effort, The Invite, that she was “appalled and disgusted” by ICE.

“We can’t just accept this as the new normal and live another day. It’s outrageous. People are being murdered,” Wilde said. “And I don’t want to normalize seeing people murdered on the internet, on movies. That’s terrible. So if there’s anything we can do here to support the movement to deport ICE and outlaw this incredible criminal organization, that’s what we need to do.”
