Next time you order a cheap cameo video from a washed-up reality TV star as a gag, take note. There may be a coincidence of murders in the background. That’s the premise of the comedy pilot “Lex,” which Hulu ordered Wednesday.
20th Television’s “Lex” comes from writer and executive producer Sean Clements (“Severance”) and executive producer Paul Sims (“Atlanta”). The logline is: “When a disgraced former reality star accidentally films a murder in the background of a $20 cameo video, he finds himself at the center of a global conspiracy and on the run from powerful forces intent on his death. Using the skills he developed navigating the toxic social dynamics of reality TV, Lex must fight to avoid being killed, expose the truth, and most importantly… get back on TV.”
Clements is a co-executive producer on Season 3 of Apple TV’s “Severance,” which is scheduled to shoot this year, and a writer on “The Dink,” a new film from Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films starring Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen.
Clements also co-hosts the Hollywood Handbook podcast with Hayes Davenport. His other television credits include Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” Netflix’s “Unstable,” AMC’s “Kevin Can F**k Himself,” ABC’s “United We Fall,” Comedy Central’s “Robbie,” Hulu’s “Difficult People,” Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” FOX’s “Ghosted,” “Making History” and “The Grinder.”
Mr. Sims serves as an executive producer in addition to writing the screenplay, but as an executive producer at FX, he has produced a string of hits such as “What We Do In the Shadows” and “Atlanta.” His major credits include “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Flight of the Conchords,” “Girls,” and “NewsRadio.” In recognition of his career, Sims received the WGA East’s Herb Sargent Award for Outstanding Comedy in 2023.
Mr. Clements is represented by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Callis LLP, and Mr. Sims is represented by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham LLP.
