Exactly 20 years ago today, “Hannah Montana” premiered on Disney Channel, introducing viewers to a new star in the titular pop star: Miley Cyrus.
Today, Cyrus puts her blonde wig back on and celebrates the teen sitcom’s legacy with a special “Hannah Montana” 20th Anniversary streaming exclusively on Disney+.
“Hannah Montana” originally aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2011, and a feature film was released in 2009. The series followed Miley Stewart (Cyrus), a pop sensation known as a “regular girl” by day and blonde wig-wearing Hannah Montana by night.
The new special will feature Cyrus returning to her character’s iconic closet and glittering wardrobe, as well as a new intimate sit-down with “Call Her Daddy” host and “Hannah Montana” superfan Alex Cooper. Never-before-seen footage and recreations of memorable sets from the TV show will also take center stage as Cyrus reflects on the moments, music and memories that defined her “Hannah Montana” days.
“‘Hannah Montana’ has always been a part of who I am,” Cyrus said in a release announcing the special. “What started as a television show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of many of my fans. I will always be grateful for that connection.”

Who will appear in the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special?
In addition to Miley Cyrus, her mother, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who played her father in Hannah Montana, are also confirmed to appear in the special, according to the trailer (watch below).
Miley also confirmed to Variety that Selena Gomez, who also started her career on Disney Channel, will be making a cameo appearance in the Hannah Montana special. Gomez played “Wizards of Waverly Place” character Alex Russo in a 2009 crossover episode, but also appeared in three episodes of “Hannah Montana” as rival pop star Mikayla.
