“Saturday Night Live” paid tribute to director Rob Reiner following his tragic death.
On Saturday’s final episode of the year, the sketch comedy series showed Rob’s tribute card on screen before the Good Night segment.
The obituary included an old photo of the late coach and his name.
Rob, who was murdered along with his wife Michelle Reiner in their Los Angeles home last Sunday, hosted the third-ever episode of “SNL” on Oct. 25, 1975.
Famous film directors appeared in multiple sketches, but episode one host George Carlin and episode two host Paul Simon did not appear.
He was accompanied by his then-wife Penny Marshall during his appearances, including the sketch with the bees.
Unusually, Rob’s episode had no musical guests. Instead, John Belushi performed “With a Little Help from My Friends” while imitating Joe Cocker.
The cast of the NBC show at the time included Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner.
Almost 20 years later, Rob was impersonated by Chris Farley from “SNL” during the February 20, 1993 cold open.
Earlier this year, Rob and Michelle attended “SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert” in New York City.
Last Sunday, news broke that 78-year-old Rob and his 70-year-old wife were stabbed to death in their Brentwood home.
They were found with multiple wounds all over their bodies, including a stab wound to their throats. Their official cause of death is listed as “multiple sharp force injuries.”
The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and formally charged with the murders of his parents.
The 32-year-old has a troubled past, including addiction and homelessness. The night before his parents were murdered, he reportedly acted erratically at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party.
“Father and son got into an argument that got so bad and loud that someone tried to call the police,” an insider told the Daily Mail on Friday. “But Conan came in and said, ‘This is my house, this is my party, I’m not going to call the police.'” He persuaded them not to call the police. ”
Rob was also reported to have shockingly told close friends at the party that he was “petrified” at an event following the bombing, fearing that his son’s last words might “hurt” him.
Rob and Michelle, who have two other children, daughter Romy, 28, and son Jake, 34, released a heartbreaking statement about their parents’ deaths on Wednesday.
“Words can’t even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the brother-sister duo told Page Six. “The horrifying and devastating loss of our parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience.”
