How Netflix used ‘Stranger Things’ to boost sales of ‘The First Shadow’

Fans left the Stranger Things: The First Shadow performance on Dec. 19 excited after a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Henry Creel/Vecna on the hit Netflix series, made a surprise cameo in the show’s epilogue.

“That was the coolest reveal ever,” one fan told his partner on the escalator after the performance at Broadway’s Marquis Theater.

Bower appeared briefly in the final scene of the play, which centers on young Henry Creel (Louis McCartney), who struggles with his dark powers after moving to Hawkins, Indiana in 1959. In the epilogue, an older Creel is introduced to a younger Eleven in Hawkins Laboratory’s iconic Rainbow Room, a moment that directly connects the Broadway prequel to the Stranger Things timeline.

“I was very careful in crafting the role because I got to see the full humanity of Henry as a child,” Bower told Variety on the eve of his Broadway debut. “So it’s a gift to see that and for the fans to be able to experience that and know him and feel him.”

Within minutes, a video of Bower bowing on stage with the cast of “The First Shadow” began circulating on social media. Reactions ranged from fans asking how the play would tie into the TV series to requests for the production to be recorded to stream on Netflix. “Wow, I’m so jealous!” one user wrote. “I would love to see that.”

The surprise appearance, released only to a select group of reporters under a strict embargo, immediately sparked buzz, curiosity, and FOMO throughout the Stranger Things fandom.

“Although Mr. Bower’s cameo was billed as a one-time appearance, its impact on fans and the show’s mythology will likely last much longer,” Netflix said in a statement.

The carefully timed moment comes as “The First Shadow” continues to gain momentum, with ticket sales surging for both Broadway and West End shows after the start of its final season. Production officials say sales are currently at their highest level since the show’s inception, with viewers booking through the traditionally strong holiday weeks as well as into 2026, a sign of continued fan appetite for the series’ expanding world.

“The First Shadow” expands on the “Stranger Things” mythology in a way that contrasts with Marvel’s Disney+ model. In this model, characters and plots are often introduced in a limited series, which is often later released in a theatrical release with minimal recaps. Meanwhile, many of the pivotal moments that define Henry Creel’s origins in The First Shadow will be rehashed on screen in the form of Vecna’s memories in the second and final season. “That’s what we call our new Russia storyline,” Matt Duffer told Variety. “I’m very happy with how it’s integrated with the other storylines.”

Another advantage in favor of the Broadway production is the firm focus on Hawkins’ bubble of small-town residents that fans have come to love on “Stranger Things.” All characters listed on the flyer appear in or are directly related to someone in the Netflix series.

Virginia Creel (Rosie Benton) – Henry Creel/Vecna’s mother Dr. Martin Brenner (Alex Breaux) – Young Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) Patty’s mother (Ta’Rea Campbell) – Patti Newby’s mother, Bob Newby’s sister Alice Creel (Leah Christina, Francesca Ehlen) – Henry Creel/Vecna’s sister Charles Sinclair (Robert T. Cunningham) — father of Lucas Sinclair, Sue Anderson (Ayana Simon) — mother of Lucas, later known as Sue Sinclair Walter Henderson (Ian Dolly) — father of Dustin Henderson Karen Childress (Dora Dolphin) — later Karen Wheeler (Calabuono) Ronnie Byers (Logan Gould) — Joyce Byers’ abusive ex-husband (Ross Partridge) Claudia Yount (Thea Grant) – Dustin’s mother, later known as Claudia Henderson Principal Newby (Andrew Hovelson) – Bob Newby’s father Joyce Maldonado (Alison Jay) – later known as Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) Victor Creel (TR Knight) – Henry Creel/Becna’s father Chief Hopper/Captain Brenner (Ted Koch) – Jim Hopper’s father Ted Wheeler (Jamie Martin Mann) – Mike Wheeler’s father Henry Creel (Louis McCartney) – Later transformed into Vecna Bob Newby (Patrick Scott McDermott) – Young Bob Newby (Sean Astin) Patti Newby (Gabrielle Never) – Bob Newby’s sister James Hopper Jr. (Burke Swanson) — Young Jim Hopper (David) Harbor) Alan Manson (Eric Wiegand) — Eddie Manson’s father

Stranger Things: The First Shadow won four trophies at this year’s Tony Awards, including Best Scenic Design (Miriam Bueser & 59), Best Lighting Design (John Clark), and Best Sound Design (Paul Arditti). The production also received a special Tony Award honoring the illusion and technical effects team of Jamie Harrison, Chris Fisher, Gary Beeston and Edward Pearce.

It’s still unclear how long the production will run on Broadway, but with the final episodes of Stranger Things being released on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, there’s little sign of the momentum slowing down anytime soon.
