It’s difficult to become a movie star and a dad. Ask Channing Tatum.
In the latest episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast, Variety Chief Correspondent Daniel D’Addario details his September 2nd cover story featuring Tatum and director Derek Cianfrance.
Tatum and Cianfrance came together as collaborators when both were reorganizing their careers. Tatum is extremely open to discussing the challenges of juggling filming around the world, his most important job of being a parent of a 12-year-old daughter.
Tatum from D’Addario Notes is at a key transition point in his career as he reaches the mid-40s. “Roofman,” which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, tells the story of Jeffrey Manchester, a blue-collar North Carolina man. Manchester was sentenced to 34 years in prison after being convicted of several robberies in 2000.
“I think (Tatum) is the guy on “Magic Microphone” or “21 Jump Street.” It’s a fun love, goofball. He has lived a lot of life ever since,” says D’Addario. “These films are almost 15 years old, and at 45, he really reflects the career he wants and the type of work he wants to do.
The developmental activities of “Roofman” came when Cyan France was also moving to a new chapter in his career as a scribe and helmer.
CianFrance also reflected what story he wanted to tell after taking a little break and telling many stories that surprised a similar note of parent-child inheritance,” observed D’Addario. “So, being a father is a big part of their identity, the two come together to tell this story about a man who is motivated by his daughter’s love and commit a shaky crime. I think people are surprised.”
The episode also features Elsa Keslassy, an international editor of variety, fresh from the Venice Film Festival after being immersed in films and film stars. Kesrasy gives the buzz from the decline in Biz and Lido in another year characterized by wild weather at the festival. “After the Hunt,” “Bagonia,” “Smashing Machine,” and “Wizard of the Kremlin” are one of the titles that got a big FYC boost from a powerful show in Venice.
The Topsitterbee state of the film industry was also a hot topic among industry insiders who gathered on Italian coasts for the prestigious festival that will be held until September 6th.
“One topic covered during the festival in press conferences and interviews was how difficult it is to raise funds for independent films today,” Kesrasy cited “Bgonia” Helmer Yorgoslantsimos as an example. “Yorgos Lantimos mentioned it during a press conference talking about “Bagonia,” a remake of a Korean film. He talked about the difficulty of funding an original independent film that is not based on a huge franchise.
