Bestseller author Isabel Allende has revealed that adaptation of the series of her iconic debut novel The House of the Sprits will premiere on Prime Video next year.
At a press conference held in Santiago, Chile, Allende showed participants a clip from the eight-episode Spanish series based on her hugely popular family saga.
“The House of the Spirits” follows the Trueba family through decades of love, conflict and social upheaval. It tells the multi-generational magical realist story of hidden romance, deep passion, and sacrifices of violent revolution. As the years pass, family secrets and struggles are promoted to breakpoints, increasing the gap between the proud Patriarch and his strong-willed granddaughter.
New images of the series reveal the cast, led by Ala Incuppenheim (“Chile ’76”), as Nivea del Val, Fernanda Ulrihora (“Cry Macho”), as Blanca Truba and Roti Hernandez as Alba.
Other cast members include Alfonso Herrera (“Sense8”) as Esteban Truba, including Nicole Wallace (“My Fall”) and actress Helmer Dolores Fonji. “Belem” will play on Prime Video after the festival runs.
The author took part in a panel discussion with showrunner Francisca Alegria (“The Cow Who Sings the Songs to the Future”), Urrejola and Andrés Wood (“News of the Embedded”), where he discussed his adaptation to the series.
With over 70 million copies sold worldwide, The House of the Spirits is considered one of the most important novels of the 20th century. It was previously featured in a film starring Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons and Antonio Banderas in 1993. The film was panned with the accent Hodge Podge in mind. In an interview with Variety in 2021, Arende reflected on the film adaptation, noting that in the early 90s, most people weren’t used to subtitles, so they needed a big cast. “Today, it can be in Mayan, Spanish, Quechua, or any language, and you don’t need a big name, you’re just a good actor,” she said.
The series is produced by FilmNation, the multi-authorized award-winning team behind “Anola” and “Conclave” with support from Pablo and Juan de Dios Larein’s production company Fabro and Juan de Dios Larein’s production company Fabro and Juan de Dios Larein’s production company Fabra.
Allende, Eva Longoria (CNN series “France for France”) Through her Hyphenate Media Group Company, Courtney Saladino (“Jessica Jones”) serves as executive producer.
The planned Chilean series will only be available on Prime videos in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.
Participates in the growing slate of Amazon original productions in Latin America led by Betty La Fair: La Historia Con Contiller, desconectados 2: Reconectados, Vencer o Morir, Menem and Sayen.
