Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Masika Kalysha’s estranged husband Jamar Champ was reportedly killed in a car accident with a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a Houston freeway. He was 38 years old.
The accident occurred just after 12 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 28, according to a Houston Police Department news release.
A silver BMW was heading west in the eastbound lanes of the 6600 Katy Freeway (Western Interstate 10) when it collided head-on with a silver Tesla Cybertruck. The BMW burst into flames and the Cybertruck collided with a blue 18-wheel Freightliner, Sergeant R. Dallas and Officer R. Young of the HPD Vehicle Crimes Unit said in an HPD release.
Police said the driver of the Cybertruck was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. The Cybertruck driver was later identified as Champ by friends and family, according to KHOU.
He is a former North Dakota State University football player who played one season with the team in 2005, according to KVRR.
The driver of the BMW involved in the accident also died. Their names have not yet been released by authorities. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, HPD said.
Police told KHOU that an autopsy will be performed to “determine if impairment played a role” in the accident.
On Tuesday, Karisha appeared to allude to Champ’s death in a post on her X account. “God woke me up at 2am…I couldn’t sleep,” she wrote. “I didn’t know why. Jesus, I just received the worst news of my life. Please pray for me and my children.”
In an Instagram video, Kalysha asked news outlets to “reserve information” but did not comment further on Champ’s death.
“I respectfully ask you to please refrain from posting information until I do, because rumors travel quickly to children and my children are not on social media, but many of their friends are on social media and all of their parents are,” she said in the video. “And I don’t want my kids to know that at school before I tell them.”
Karisha and Champ married in 2021 and have a 3-year-old daughter, Amari.
“Please respect my family and children at this time as I am in turmoil,” Karisha wrote in an Instagram video.
In an Instagram Live video shared in December 2023, Masika revealed that they had been “separated” for the entire year. In 2024, she said in an interview that she was “in mediation” with her “soon-to-be ex-husband.”
