Hilary Duff likened her “lonely” estrangement from her sister Hayley Duff to her 2015 divorce from Mike Comrie.
The singer gave insight into the rift between the two while talking about her song “We Don’t Talk,” but admitted it was a song about her older sibling.
“I feel like when I got divorced[in 2015]I was dealing with it privately and then the news broke and I was like, ‘Okay, great. I’m going to work on this again,'” Hilary, 38, told Rolling Stone in an interview published Thursday.
“I had prepared a little bit. I made the choice to put that song on my record. It was definitely the loneliest part of my life and I struggled with, ‘Am I going to share this?'”
“People have known my life since I was a kid,” the former Disney Channel star continued. “So they know all the characters and they know what I’m talking about. It was important to me to be open about the subject matter. It really came from the heart.”
Hilary and Comrie, who have a 13-year-old son, Luca, married in August 2010 and separated in January 2014.
The Younger actress married Matthew Koma in 2017 and the pair have three daughters, Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 1.
Despite her willingness to share her and Hailey’s feud through music, Hilary admitted she was “not ready” for all the fan theories that came with it.
During a recent concert in London, fans believed she might be referring to their feud when she performed on a mustard-colored couch similar to the one at Hailey’s home.
“‘The sofa is the color of the sofa…’ is complete bullshit, completely untrue and crazy,” Hilary declared.
“And I don’t have the time to put up a thread to let people know about that. I have a full life, a busy family, and this was literally a song about my truth and that was it.”
Earlier this week, the Lizzie McGuire alum opened up about her “complicated” family relationships and her decision to write about them in two songs on her new album, Luck…or Something.
“That’s my family. They’re the people who influence you the most and naturally take up the most space as a human being born into something,” she told Glamor.
“Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean you’ll always be together,” she continued. “The only thing you can control is your side and the street.”
Hilary admitted that she has “lived a very complicated life” and cited the “very complicated” dynamic between her divorced parents, Bob and Susan.
“I know that’s not unusual, but I think it goes back to the theme of why we’re sharing now,” she said. “I think I felt like I was ready.”
Although the sisters have appeared in multiple music and film projects together, they have not been photographed together since 2019 and have not interacted on social media in recent years.
Hailey, 41, recently made headlines for siding with Ashley Tisdale in slamming a group of moms (which includes Hillary among several A-listers) as toxic.
Neither sister has publicly revealed the reason for their rift. However, Hilary hinted at feelings of jealousy over Hailey’s ending in the lyrics of “We Don’t Talk.”
