Hilary Duff was “ready” to explore her “complicated” family relationships on her new album as her feud with sister Haylie Duff continues.
In a new interview with Glamor magazine, Hilary, 38, made a rare comment about Hailey, 40,’s rift with her father Bob Duff, and why she addressed it with two new songs.
“That’s my family. They’re the people who influence you the most and naturally take up the most space as a human being born into something,” she told the outlet.
“Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean you’ll always be together,” the “Lizzie McGuire” actress continued. “The only thing you can control is your side and the street.”
Hilary admitted that she has had a “very complicated life” and said her parents Bob and Susan, who divorced in 2008, also have a “very complicated” dynamic.
“I know that’s not unusual, but I think it goes back to the theme of why we’re sharing now,” she said. “I think I felt like I was ready.”
“I wish I could sleep on a plane and my dad really loved me,” Hilary sings in “The Optimist,” a song from her new album Luck or Something.
Hilary’s parents went through several years of legal battles before officially divorcing after 20 years of marriage.
Bob was briefly jailed for contempt of court in 2008 for selling his family’s assets without permission.
At the time, he blamed his daughters’ careers for the breakdown of their marriage.
“Susan was obsessed with their careers…We just drifted apart,” he told Inside Edition.
He also admitted, “I was unfaithful in my marriage and I am very sorry for that and the effect it had on the girls.”
Hilary, 38, chose to give a rare insight into her estrangement from Hailey, 40, in another new song, “We Don’t Talk.”
She sang at London’s O2 Shepherd last month that she “don’t know what happened” that caused the rift, which she calls an “emotional eviction” in the song.
“I don’t even know what it was about,” the lyrics also say. “If I did something different/Would you feel different?/Would you at least let your voice be heard?”
The Duff sisters have not been photographed together since 2019 and have not interacted on social media in recent years.
Hailey recently made headlines for liking Ashley Tisdale’s post in response to Kat’s scathing essay exposing her “toxic” mom group, including Hilary.
The “7th Heaven” actress then enjoyed dinner with Tisdale and their respective families in Malibu, California.
Neither of the Duff sisters has publicly discussed the reason for their rift.
