Henry Cavill has traded in his Superman trunks and Witcher sword for a new action role in Highlander, a reboot directed by John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski.
The action star posted two first-look images on Instagram Wednesday morning. “Congratulations on your first look at Highlander!” Cavill wrote. “This has been quite the journey for me. I’ll talk about it when the time is right, but it’s a special moment to be able to share this with you. I hope you enjoy it.”
Cavill was first announced to star in the Highlander reboot in 2021, and filming has finally begun. It’s not very obvious from the first look photos, but it’s similar in tone and look to Keanu Reeves’ four action-packed “John Wick” movies, all directed by Stahelski. In one photo, Kabir is seen brandishing a heavy sword, and it looks like this could be a globe-trotting epic based on two different locations. Production was delayed late last year after Cavill sustained an injury while preparing for the film.
The ‘Highlander’ reboot cast also includes Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abella and Max Chung. Michael Finch wrote the script, and Ryan J. Condal and Kelly Williamson worked on early drafts of the film.
The original Highlander was released in 1986 and starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish warrior born in the 16th century. Sean Connery plays Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramirez, another immortal who mentored Connor, and Clancy Brown plays Kurgan, who hunts down Connor in 1980s New York. Lambert and Connelly returned for the sequel in 1991, and the series continued through further sequels, a television series, and spin-off novels.
