HBO is developing a television version of Hasbro’s fantasy role-playing video game series Baldur’s Gate.
Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of HBO’s hit video game adaptation The Last of Us, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Mazin is also the work of HBO’s 2019 limited series “Chernobyl.” Mazin will also executive produce alongside Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor and Hasbro Entertainment’s head of television, Gabriel Marano.
The first Baldur’s Gate game, part of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, was released in 1998. Most recently, Baldur’s Gate 3 debuted in 2023 to critical critical and commercial success, winning all five major Game of the Year awards and becoming the first title to reach over 15 million players.
“After spending nearly 1,000 hours in the wonderful world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast have created,” Muzzin said in a statement. “I’m a huge fan of D&D and the masterful way Swen Vinke and his talented team have arranged it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and its incredible characters to life with all the respect and love I can. I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and the team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president and head of drama programming at HBO. “His long-standing and deep passion for the original work, combined with his extraordinary talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich and engaging characters, promises groundbreaking results.”
“Fans have been looking forward to the animated version of Baldur’s Gate, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner to build this world than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin,” said Marano.
