Hailey Bieber revealed in a WSJ profile how she hates being compared to other stars, including Justin’s ex Selena Gomez. She said she “didn’t ask for” that treatment and didn’t feel competitive with other beauty brands Hailey Bieber spoke at length about being compared to Gomez in June 2023, saying, “I hated it from the beginning.”
Hailey Bieber is celebrating one of Lorde’s most successful years ever, following her $1 billion acquisition by Elf Beauty and recent launch at Sephora. Still, she told WSJ Magazine that these milestones didn’t stop people from putting her at odds with her marriage to Justin Bieber and other celebrities, including Justin’s ex Selena Gomez.
She said she doesn’t feel competitive with other Sephora brands, including Gomez’s Rare Beauty line. “I think there’s space for everyone,” she said, noting that she’s most competitive against herself. “I don’t feel competitive towards people who I’m not inspired by.”
When a reporter tried to directly ask about the comparison between Gomez and Rare Beauty, Hailey’s publicist cut off the question. However, Haley still talked about how much she doesn’t appreciate competing with anyone.
“It’s always frustrating to be pitted against others. I didn’t ask for that,” she said. “If people want to see you a certain way and they’ve created a story about you in their minds, it’s not your responsibility to change it.”
Speculation about Hailey and Justin’s relationship hasn’t stopped, but Hailey emphasized the reality of their relationship, saying, “We’re both really finding the voices of who we are, and I believe that we’re both really finding our voices and being true to what we want to do.”
The star spoke more specifically about facing Gomez in June 2023. “I don’t think this is about me, Hailey Bieber or Selena Gomez. This is not about a conflict between two women or a division between two women,” she said on The Circuit with Emily Chan. “This is a story about vile, disgusting hatred that comes from a completely fabricated, distorted and perpetuated narrative. It can be truly dangerous.”
She especially hated how she was compared to Gomez based solely on her connection to Justin. “For[two women]to be at odds because of a man? That’s terrible,” she said. “I hate it. I hated it from the beginning. And I think when it happens over and over again, it goes back to being a bit of a misunderstanding. Why do I have to keep saying, we have to keep saying we don’t have a problem, we have to keep saying we don’t have a problem. It’s very unfortunate that people still act this way towards men. Unfortunately, that’s the world we live in.”
