Gwyneth Paltrow made a rare comment about her ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck on Tuesday’s episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast “Good Hang.”
When Amy Poehler asked about her friendship with the late actor Robin Williams, the 53-year-old actress brought up her ex-boyfriend, without revealing his name.
“I got to know him a little bit when ‘Good Will Hunting’ came out[in1997]because I was dating one of the guys who wrote that movie and I was in that movie,” she said, referring to Affleck, also 53.
“We know better,” Poehler quipped, adding that Affleck “was very good in that movie,” to which Paltrow agreed.
“I love that movie. It’s the perfect movie. I absolutely love it,” exclaimed the Goop founder and CEO, who had actually worked with Williams in 1991 when they starred in Hook.
Affleck and Paltrow began dating in 1997, shortly after she split from Brad Pitt.
The “Marty Supreme” actress and Affleck went on to co-star in the films “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998 and “Bounce” in 2000, but ultimately called it quits that same year.
Author Amy O’Dell recently gave further insight into Paltrow and Affleck’s tumultuous relationship in her book, Gwyneth: The Biography.
“Around the time he met Gwyneth, Affleck was struggling with alcoholism and a gambling problem. Affleck didn’t always reciprocate her affections, and his friends felt insecure about him. At times, he seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at home than being with Gwyneth,” O’Dell claimed in July 2025.
Upon learning of their rocky relationship, “her friends felt like Paltrow didn’t appreciate her,” she added, adding that while Paltrow would cook dinner for her, Affleck preferred “going out with the guys.”
She “would compare him to[the cast of]’Entourage,'” O’Dell claimed.
O’Dell also claimed that the Academy Award winner was not shy about talking about their sex life, detailing that “one day she told[makeup artist Kevin]Aucoin that she loved Affleck[engaging in certain sex acts].”
Gwyneth also revealed some sexy details about their sex life when she appeared on Call Her Daddy in 2023 and described Affleck as “technically excellent” in bed.
Three years after splitting from Affleck, Paltrow met Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, with whom she shares daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19.
The pair split in 2016, and two years later she married TV writer and director Brad Falchuk.
As for Affleck, he was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018 and Jennifer Lopez from 2022 to 2025.
