According to Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t realize that the “terrible skin” Timothée Chalamet had while filming Marty Supreme was actually professionally done makeup.
Chalamet, 30, and Downey Jr., 60, attended a Q&A for the film on January 14th at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles. At one point, Downey Jr. teased a Marvel co-star who thought Chalamet actually had acne-scarred skin, when in fact he was making it look that way on purpose.
“Paltrow said that when she met you, she was like, ‘Oh my god, I didn’t know he had bad skin,'” Downey Jr. told Chalamet.
“And I was like, ‘You’re bad at makeup, Gwyneth,'” the actor added.

Marty Supreme follows Chalamet as Marty Moser, a shoe salesman obsessed with becoming the world’s best table tennis player in 1950s New York.
In addition to Chalamet and Paltrow, 53, the Josh Safdie-directed film also stars Odessa Azion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and recent PEOPLE cover star Fran Drescher.

On the Dec. 2 episode of her podcast, “The Run-Through with Vogue,” Paltrow, 53, recalled how she mistakenly gave Chalamet skin care advice during a shoot, believing Chalamet’s rough skin was her own.
“Timothy in ‘Marty Supreme’ had pockmarks and contacts and glasses that made his eyes beady. And it’s all makeup. And he has beautiful skin in real life…[and]he made a comment and I thought, ‘Oh, you know, you can do microneedling,'” she recalled with a laugh. “And he said, ‘This is makeup!'” I was like, “Oh, oh-” I didn’t understand. The makeup went on so well that I thought I might have fewer acne scars. ”

Paltrow and Chalamet became close working together on Marty Supreme, especially while the actress filmed “a lot” of sex scenes.
In a separate Q&A conducted in support of the film, Paltrow recalled, “He was 27 or 28 and I was 50 and whatever, it was weird. And I thought, ‘Oh, if that’s weird for me, it’s probably really weird[for him].’ But it was actually okay. It wasn’t that weird.”
“He’s so easy to work with,” she added of the recent Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice winner. “He’s very good and dedicated, comfortable and confident.”
“Marty Supreme” is currently in theaters.
