Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein will receive the Gotham Vanguard Tribute at the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards on December 1st at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The Vanguard Tribute was established to recognize pioneering films that push the boundaries of cinema through fearless artistic choices. The event honors Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, the filmmakers who reimagined Mary Shelley’s classic novel.
Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, a tortured scientist who embarks on an ego-driven quest to bring new life to this world, resulting in the birth of Frankenstein, played by Elordi.
“Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has captivated audiences for more than 200 years, and Guillermo del Toro’s epic adaptation reminds us why this story continues to be told today,” Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, said in a statement.
Sharp continued, “Guillermo, Oscar and Jacob have created a truly breathtaking work, a film that honors its literary heritage while boldly exploring the deep questions of what it means to be human. Their collaboration embodies the blend of creativity, talent and vision that The Gotham hopes to celebrate.”
Mia Goth also stars as Elizabeth, Victor’s devoted daughter, sister, and eventual wife. Christoph Waltz joins the cast to play Henrich Hallander, a wealthy weapons manufacturer who funds Victor’s experiments.
Del Toro has a long history with Gotham, winning the Best Director award in 2006 along with Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Isaac has been nominated for the Gotham Excellence Award three times. Elordi is recognized by Gotham for the first time.
Winners of the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards will be recognized at the awards ceremony. Candidates will be announced on October 28th.
