Grimes’ fans were left “very confused” as they were left divided after the singer shared an unusual new tattoo.
The songstress showed off her new ink, a barely recognizable ring near her left eye, in an Instagram snapshot shared on Wednesday.
“It took me about 10 emotional years to get my face tattoo, but I think I drew so much on my face that literally no one noticed,” she wrote in the caption, explaining her new tattoo, adding that “not even[her]parents” knew she had gotten the new ink, despite appearing in her latest music video.
“That said, I think @glyphomancer is doing something really fresh and innovative, especially with his work on facial tattoos. There’s real beauty, delicacy, and innovation here,” she continued. “I feel like tattoos are in a crazy renaissance era where they’re kind of underappreciated.”
She added to X: “This face tattoo isn’t very noticeable, but mind you, it’s my favorite tattoo.”
This tattoo was created by artist Gryphomancer, who specializes in cybersigilistic tattoos, a modern tattoo aesthetic that combines the symbolism of ancient seals with a cyberpunk vibe.
Grimes, 37, modeled the tattoo in the new music video for “Artificial Angels,” released Friday.
Fans are divided over this look, with some criticizing it in the comment thread.
One person said, “Shuuk,” while another added, “Is the face tattoo in the same room as us??” A third commented bitterly: “I remember the first time I had ringworm.”
A fourth follower joked: “What’s your favorite pasta noodle shape?”, while another wrote: “I could have gotten the coolest face tattoo ever but I got this instead. Sorry but I’m so confused 💀.”
Some were obsessed with the hitmaker’s iconic new tattoo. One fan commented, “I especially like the blonde hair,” while another agreed, saying, “You look great on it.”
Another wrote: “I love it so much,” while another commented: “Gorgeous as always🔥🔥😍.”
Grimes, who famously has three children with ex Elon Musk, got a red ink tattoo across her leg in 2023, and previously said she wanted to be “covered all over” with the “alien” tattoo.
Three years ago, she teased the possibility of getting ink on her face. “I’m seriously considering getting a white ink tattoo on my face next week,” she captioned a now-deleted selfie at the time.
“Do you have any thoughts? I feel like it’s about time.”
Grimes joins an elite group of A-listers who have added ink to their faces. Many people have tattoos on their faces, including Justin Bieber, Amanda Bynes, and Post Malone.
