Grey’s Anatomy cast and show creator Shonda Rhimes are speaking out following Eric Dane’s death. The actor, who appeared as Dr. Mark Sloan in episode 145 of the ABC medical drama, passed away on February 19th after a battle with ALS.

“Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families. He was a truly talented actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and audiences around the world.”

“We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship, and humanity he shared with us over the years. Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work.”

The company and Rhimes also posted a video tribute to Dane on Instagram.

Kim Raver, who played Dr. Teddy Altman on Grey’s Anatomy, also posted on Instagram on Thursday after news of his death broke.

“Eric was a light. You could see him effortlessly light up on the set of ‘Grey’s’ and when he was with Rebecca and the girls. During filming, he had a twinkle in his eye, a mischievous look on his face, and delivered lines that would blow your mind with perfect comedic timing. You will be missed,” Raver wrote. “My love and thoughts go out to Rebecca and your daughters. We love you.”

Longtime executive producer Krista Vernoff shared a screenshot of a text conversation from Dane’s return to the show in a cameo role in 2021, nine years after his exit (and the death of his character). Mark appeared in a 2021 episode as part of Meredith’s dream. Dane appeared on screen alongside Chyler Leigh, who played Lexi Gray (who had passed away after the plane crash that killed Mark).

“I called Eric and he answered right away. I said, ‘Can you come back? I know filming in a pandemic is a nightmare, but we’re going to do it on the beach and social distance. Because the world needs joy and Mark and Lexi are joy. He said when and where,'” she captioned the post. “When I came on set that day, he said, ‘We break the rules and hug, right? What I remember most about Eric Dane is his hugs. The best hugs. Oh, my friend. I wish you peace.’

Dane, whose character is known as “McSteamy,” guest-starred on season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy.” But viewers quickly fell in love with the character, and he returned as a series regular in season three. He last appeared in the second episode of Season 9, when Mark was removed from life support in a plane crash and died. Creator Rhimes has often said that this character is one of her favorite characters to write.

Kevin McKidd, who has played Dr. Owen Hunt since Season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy, also paid tribute to Dane by posting a photo of him on his Instagram Stories on Thursday night, writing, “Rest in peace, buddy.”

ABC and 20th Television said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Eric Dane.” “His extraordinary talent and unforgettable presence on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ had a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace in the fight against ALS inspired many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, colleagues and the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”

In April 2025, just 11 months before his death, Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS.

Last month, during the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala, Secretary Pompeo revealed in a prerecorded video that he texted Dane immediately after learning of his diagnosis. “As soon as I heard about his diagnosis, I texted him and said, ‘I’m here if you want to talk,’ and 30 seconds later my phone rang,” she said at the time.
