Glen Powell’s protagonist in Hulu’s “Chad Powers” has his eyes on becoming a successful footballer, but Powell has his eyes on a potential season 2 cameo, Taylor Swift.
“I’m working towards her,” joked co-star Perry Mattfield, who plays the show’s lonely female coach, in a conversation moderated by Angeli K Jackson, Variety’s senior entertainment writer. “We’ll see the series and make sure she gets it. For Travis (Kelce), she looks, then we want to tie the attack and talk.”
“We got them to think about a cameo from Season 2. T-Swift Comin ‘In Hot,” Powell said.
“Chad Powers” follows the story of former college quarterback Russ Holiday (Powell), who publicly shamed himself and his team during the championship game. After years of troubled by his past, Holiday hatches his plans to redeem a failed career by walking to another football team disguised as a strange ball called Chad Powers. As Chad succeeds, Holiday may be the key to bringing back the dying football team.
“Chad Powers” was created by Powell and Michael Waldron based on Eli Manning’s ESPN+ series, “The Place of Eli.” In the current virus segment of the show, Manning infiltrated the Pennsylvania walk-on tryout under the name “Chad Power.” (Manning Executive produced a new Hulu show with his brother, NFL Hall of Fame, Peyton Manning, and created a cameo.)
Quentin Blair, who plays director Bird, spoke about creating the show. “Glenn said he doesn’t go to the football and (entertainment) industry in particular very often. Some of my favorite movies have always been sports films, and that’s what I go to see.
By playing the absurd stakes thrown at Holiday throughout the series by casting ensemble thrown at Holiday, Powell hopes viewers fall in love with each character and what they add to the world of college football. “The only way this show can work is that every cast member needs to be based on reality,” Powell said. “We not only chose this insane cast, but we bring that comedy just based on every comedy. If someone is making noise, it all falls apart.
The first two episodes of “Chad Powers” premiere on September 30th, with episodes dropping weekly.
