George Clooney can’t help but think of his “Oceans” series while watching news reports about the Louvre jewelry heist.
“If you’re a professional thief like me, I’m so proud of you,” he joked to me Thursday night at the AFI Fest premiere of his latest film, Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly.”
Will the now infamous jewelry heist make an appearance in Ocean’s 14? “I think we should rob the Louvre,” Clooney said.
Four suspects broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning and stole eight pieces of art estimated to be worth more than $100 million. Clooney is amazed at how the perpetrators carried out their plan “in broad daylight.”
Clooney described the robbery as “terrible” and said: “Will they be able to catch them? It looks like they got away with it.”
Clooney told E! In early October, news broke that Ocean’s 14 would likely be filmed next year, with original series stars Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Don Cheadle expected to return. Earlier this year, Variety reported that Fall Guy and Bullet Train director David Leitch would direct the crime-themed sequel.
“The script is finished and in great condition,” Clooney said at AFI Fest. “We are currently adjusting the schedule.”
Clooney stars in the Baumbach film as Jay Kelly, an aging movie star who contemplates his life choices and ambitions for fame, before heading to Europe to honor his lifetime achievements at a film festival. The cast also includes Adam Sandler as Jay’s manager and Laura Dern as his publicist.
Clooney reflected on his early days in Hollywood, before he found worldwide fame with ER. “I kept working. I did 13 TV pilots, some of which were successful, like ‘Roseanne,’ but I wasn’t successful. Then ‘ER’ became a hit and everything changed. It had very little to do with me, but I had the benefit of a very good script and a good time slot.”
In the decades since then, Clooney hasn’t taken much vacation. “If you slow down, you die,” he said.
“Jay Kelly” will be released in select theaters on November 14th and on Netflix on December 5th.
