Gayle King isn’t ready to announce her future at CBS, at least not on the Golden Globes red carpet.
The longtime CBS Morning anchor was asked about her plans for the station while speaking with Variety’s Marc Malkin on Variety’s Golden Globes pre-show hosted by Amazon Fire TV. This comes as CBS News continues a period of corporate and editorial restructuring under new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
“Well, I’m not going to make any announcements here,” King said. “That’s not our intention, but we’ll keep you posted.”
Mr. King has been a mainstay of the CBS morning show since joining “CBS This Morning” in January 2012, guiding the show through multiple co-anchor changes and an eventual rename to “CBS Mornings.” Her current contract is set to expire in May, and Variety previously reported that CBS executives were interested in retaining her in some capacity, potentially striking a deal to produce her own programming for the network.
On the Globes carpet, Dr. King reflected on his long-time love for the ceremony. “I love the glitz and atmosphere and glamor of nights like this,” she said. “These award shows never get old for me,” and said King, who has interviewed Hollywood’s biggest names for decades, is no longer impressed by the stars. “Once you meet really famous people, you realize they have problems just like everyone else,” she says. “They really are human beings.”
King also joked about having been approached about acting several times, noting that the only role he’s ever been offered was to play himself. “It’s very difficult to play yourself,” she said. “What’s my motivation here?”
