Is there a “Super Smash Bros.”? A movie on the horizon? With Star Fox and Super Smash Bros.’s Fox McCloud making a surprise announcement on Thursday, it looks like a Super Mario Galaxy Movie is definitely in the works. Video games join the movies.
Fans have theorized that Fox, the blink-and-you-miss-it space pilot seen in previous Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailers, will appear in the movie. Now it’s all becoming a reality. Fox’s voice actor has not yet been announced.
Fox was first introduced in the 1993 Super Nintendo action-adventure game “Star Fox,” and has since appeared in “Star Fox 64,” “Star Fox Adventures,” “Star Fox: Assault,” “Star Fox: Command,” and most recently in 2017’s “Star Fox 2.”
But many gamers know Fox from the fighting game series “Super Smash Bros.,” which brings together characters from both inside and outside of Nintendo’s products to defeat each other. Fox was one of the first fighters in the original 1999 version of Super Smash Bros. Introduced on the Nintendo 64, he has appeared in every version since then, just like Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi. Other “Mario” characters later joined the series, including Bowser, Bowser Jr., Peach, Rosalina, and Diddy Kong. Fox’s co-pilot Falco Lombardi has been added to Super Smash Bros. Melee, and villain Wolf O’Donnell has been added to Brawl.
“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” previously teased one of the Pikmin used by another “Smash Bros.” Captain Olimar, a character from the Nintendo game Pikmin, appears in the teaser, further exciting Super Smash Bros. synergistic effect. Will the space bounty hunter Samus or speed racer Captain Falcon be next? Fans will have to wait until “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” hits theaters on April 1st.
