Melanie “Mel” C. Chisholm is grateful to Spice Girls bandmate Victoria Beckham for raising her daughter out of the spotlight amid a family feud with her son Brooklyn.
The singer spoke about her 16-year-old daughter Scarlett and said that the teenager has no intention of following in her footsteps in the music industry.
“It’s such a relief!” Chisholm admitted in an interview with the Sunday Times, published Saturday.
“It’s very hard to be in the shadow of successful parents,” she continued. “The problem is, in Scarlett’s case, she’s not in the public eye. I made a conscious decision to do that when she was a baby.”
Although Chisholm did not mention Victoria by name, she did mention a friend who took the opposite path.
“Obviously, I have friends who deal with this issue in very different ways, each in their own way and completely non-judgmental,” she said. “But for me, probably because of my experience with fame, I didn’t feel comfortable making that decision for her.”
In addition to Victoria, she said her closeness with former bandmates Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner and Mel B “fluctuates”.
“Like any friendship group,” she said, adding, “I’ve always been really close with Emma.”
On Saturday, the beloved girl group reunited for Bunton’s 50th birthday party, but Mel B was the only one not in attendance.
Despite the family drama, Victoria looked chic in a black suit and happily posed with her former bandmates.
“Happy birthday to the most beautiful soul @emmaleebunton I love you guys so much @gerihalliwellhorner @melaniecmusic xxxxxxx,” Victoria captioned the Instagram photo.
The Beckham family has been putting up a united front ever since Brooklyn shared a scathing public statement slamming her parents, 51, and David, 50, on her Instagram Story.
“All my life, my parents have controlled media coverage of our family with performative social media posts, family affairs, and fake relationships. …Recently, I saw with my own eyes the lengths to which they feed countless lies to the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, in order to maintain their facade,” he wrote, noting his unwillingness to reconcile.
Brooklyn, 26, claimed his parents also tried to destroy his marriage to wife Nicola Peltz. And he accused his mother of dancing “inappropriately” with him at their 2022 wedding.
Victoria and David have yet to respond, but the other children indicate they are as close as ever.
Her son Cruz, 20, was spotted on a double date with his brother Romeo, 23, in Paris on Sunday.
Romeo and Cruise were in the City of Lights during Paris Fashion Week with their respective girlfriends Jackie Apostel and Kim Turnball.
Victoria and David’s youngest daughter Harper, 14, also showed her support for Romeo by praising his runway walk at the Willy Chavarria show at Paris Fashion Week last weekend.
“Again!! Another great show x @romeobeckham @willychavarria,” her video caption read.
