Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment has launched international sales for Daniel Sánchez Arévalo’s Casa Mayor, a Movistar Plus+ original that has just begun filming in Extremadura, Spain.

A theatrical release is scheduled for 2027 through Warner Bros. Pictures in Spain.

Directed by Antonio de la Torre (The Endless Trench, The Realm) and co-starring Marilo Marquez Villa and Julián Villagran (Group 7, The Department of Time), Casa Mayor is positioned as a rural thriller with elements of black comedy.

The script, written by María Ballesteros and José Antonio de Pascual, begins with a bang. In the middle of the night, José Luis, an Extremadura pig herder played by de la Torre, comes home covered in blood and claims to have seen a tiger.

Is he telling the truth, or is he improvising a far-fetched alibi to cover up the fact that he stole three Iberian pigs?

From there, the story revolves around uncertainty, shaking the tranquility of a small town in Badajoz province and forcing the community to choose between disbelief and the need to prove what cannot be seen.

The film is produced by Spain’s main pay company Movistar Plus +, tax operator La Pericula del Tigre AIE, Félix Tucel’s Estela Film and Carmela Martínez Oriato’s Tenampa Film. Cut One is part of Mediawan’s Boomerang TV, a recently launched organization led by Rafa Taboada. Arturo Valls’ Pólvora Films and Sánchez Arévalo’s company Tinnitus are on board, with Atresmedia Cine in collaboration.

Director Sánchez Arevalo constructed the film as a deliberate genre amalgamation of thriller, drama, black comedy, and western, emphasizing that its resistance to easy labels is central to its appeal.

Elsewhere, he hinted in a statement that resistance to categorization regarding the project’s tone was part of the design, saying, “It’s hard for me to find references, and I think that not being able to categorize it is what I’m most attracted to this idea and what I pursue most.”

To protect its roots in the modern Spanish countryside, Sánchez Arevalo underwent an extensive local casting process, surrounding de la Torre with non-professional actors from the Extremadura town of Fregenal de la Sierra.

The aim is to create an immersion in the natural atmosphere and distinctive Extremaduran accent, traits that the filmmakers say are rarely exploited on screen.

The project adds a marketable layer to Movistar Plus+’s film offering, expanding its local ambitions with originals and nourishing a production landscape that is increasingly thinking in terms of theater and platform, as the platform continues to serve as a major driver of film and television production in Spain.

“From the moment we read the first version of the Casa Mayor script, we were captivated by the strength of this project, a deeply personal blend of thriller and dark comedy, featuring emotional beats and a carousel of memorable characters,” said Guillermo Farre, Head of Movistar Plus+ Original Films and Spanish Films.

“This is an eye-opening look at today’s rural world that we believe will really grab attention. It is also perfectly in line with Movistar Plus+’s commitment to supporting projects with a unique perspective – projects that have the ambition to surprise audiences and reach a wide range of people,” he added.

“The Mayor of Casa” is based on the fiction podcast “El Tigre” by Ballesteros and de Pascual, which won the 2025 Ondas Award for Best Fiction Podcast.

The start of production on the film coincides with Sánchez Arevalo seeing box office success with his latest film. Produced by Bamboo and StudioCanal and released by Beta Fiction, “Rondaras” has grossed 1.77 million euros ($2.11 million) after five weeks at the Spanish box office through February 1, a performance that underlines Sánchez Arévalo as one of Spain’s top crossover films. filmmakers.

“The Mayor of Casa” is funded by support from Spain’s ICAA Film Institute and regional support from the Extremadura Military Government and the Community of Madrid.
